FLU SEASON

With the advent of flu season, it is important that we work together to limit the spread of illness. The diocese is following the recommendations of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Read 10 Questions on Influenza/H1N1 (Swine) Flu and the Liturgy

Here are some things you can do:

  • Consider getting vaccinated against the flu.
  • Follow rules of good hygiene, especially washing your hands often.
  • If you or members of your family are coughing, sneezing or otherwise ill, it is a good idea to stay home from Mass to recuperate and so as not to infect others.
  • Don't drink from the cup during Holy Communion if you are sick; remember that we receive the whole Christ, "body, blood, soul and divinity" when we receive of the Eucharist in either form.
  • During the Sign of Peace, if you feel under the weather or feel especially vulnerable, you may offer a reverent bow or similar gesture of peace rather than a handshake, just as you can choose to refrain from holding hands during the Our Father because of similar concerns.

All of our parish leaders are in touch with health authorities in the counties in which they are located and will follow the directions of health authorities carefully in all matters concerning health and safety. We'll adjust our practices at individual parishes or communities when and if necessary.

Please pray for the health of our community and especially for those whom you know are ill.
